Ancient India was the largest economy in the world. Between 1st and 17th centuries AD, India is estimated to have had the largest economy of the ancient and medieval world, controlling between one third and one fourth of the world’s wealth.

India was once known as the “Golden Bird” due to its immense prosperity and global trade dominance. In the 1st century, Roman women adored Indian see-through fabrics, leading Rome to send vast amounts of gold to India in exchange.

Why was India called a golden bird? because it was rich in natural resources and in gems (diamonds like the Kohinoor diamond came from India), minerals, and gold.
